Adaptive Immunity and Pathology in Malaria and COVID-19
Positions are available for a Postdoctoral Scientist or a Research Assistant in the diverse and inclusive laboratory of Robin Stephens. We are located at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) in the Center for Immunity and Inflammation (CII) with an exciting, growing core of Immunologists in the state-of the-art Cancer Center Building in Newark.
The NIH-funded projects query CD4 T cell function and differentiation, and brain and lung pathology caused by infection with Plasmodium spp.and SARS-CoV-2. We study development of multi-functional Tfh, antibody and Th1 effector responses critical for protection, including the effects of metabolism; as well as early mechanisms of differentiation of CD4+memory T cell subsets (Tmem, see Stephens R, 2010, and Opata MM, et al, 2018 PLoS Pathogensand Th1/Tfh see Carpio VH,etal, iScience, 2020). Pathology projects include the study of Neuroinflammation to understand the contribution of inflammatory cytokines, coagulation and glia to Cerebral Malaria (see Wilson KD, et al, J.Neuroinflammation, 2018), and a growing focus on lung immunopathology in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Both projects are highly collaborative. Your career development and independence will be a priority in our lab. The Stephenslab recently moved to Rutgers NJMS from the University of Texas Medical Branch (https://www.utmb.edu/internalmedicine/divisions/infectious-disease/faculty/robin-stephens).
Qualified individuals should have strong interest in these areas. For the postdoc, a recent PhD in molecular or cellular Immunology, and publications; and for the RA, a recent Bachelor’s including Immunology or Neurobiology courses would be ideal. Candidates with interest or experience in T cell biology or neuroinflammation, especially individuals with Unique backgrounds in science and Creative minds, are encouraged to apply.
The CII at Rutgers NJMS is a multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative center with laboratories dedicated to researching basic adaptive and innate immune responses to parasites, allergies, autoimmune diseases and the microbiome. Opportunities for collaborations on organ-specific immunopathology at Biosafety levels 1-3 exist within the center, the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology & Neuroscience and in the Public Health Research Institute and the Center for COVID-19. The Newark location provides excellent opportunities to explore the New York City metropolitan area while enjoying the greenery and relatively lower cost-of-living of New Jersey.
To apply, please send CV, cover letter with a statement of research interests, and names of three references to Robin.Stephens@Rutgers.edu, Subject: Application.
